Stories that Heal

My story

My name is Victoria Costello

WELCOME. I'm so glad you found me. Suffice to say, my professional and personal lives have often overlapped. At best, each has fed the other. In hard times, as a single mother of two sons carrying a heavy load of family trauma, I've managed to keep us alive, even thrive, while learning essential strategies for living. Chief among these: the value of art, community, and my spiritual practice.

Along the way, I've made several films — with one earning me an Emmy Award as its writer — and published six books, some featured below. I've christened this new online community STORIES THAT HEAL to meet the challenging times we find ourselves in as sentient beings attempting to do more than survive. I see myself as part of a genuine shift in the collective consciousness, in a time when we can and must prioritize the values of love and compassion. Teaching is where my skill set seems most valuable in this huge collective endeavor — with a focus on helping creative seekers tell their healing stories.

It was two decades ago, while working as a professional science writer, that I first felt compelled to dig deep into  the intergenerational wound which had brought a succession of tragedies to my family. The catalyst was a terrifying illness afflicting my then teenage son which I eventually tied epigenetically to my Irish ancestors. My struggle to understand what was happening to my son became the precipitating incident for the story I share in my memoir, A LETHAL INHERITANCE (Prometheus Books/2012).

After doing more personal shadow work and gaining practice in my craft, I returned to my family trauma, this time writing our story as autofiction, a hybrid genre combining fact and fiction. One question guided this creative process — what if? What if 21st century descendants of a lineage like mine discovered a current crisis in their lives could be linked directly to an ancestral tragedy. And what if they also found the same ancestor had passed on to one of their own a heretofore unrecognized gift. In ORCHID CHILD, the gift of second sight manifests in a troubled teenage boy whose ability to see what others can't opens a portal connecting the present with the past, offering a path to healing for both ends of the lineage.

These titles are available everywhere books are sold. My last film, WOLF NATION, is viewable on youtube. Scroll below for reviews, interviews and excerpts.

ORCHID CHILD reflects the author's fascination with ancestry; how the legacies of those who came before us can appear in our lives in mysterious ways, and the challenges faced by second and third generation descendants of immigrants who wish to understand and reclaim their ancestry.
